Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - This book is actually the personal memoir of Edmond Babler, which Daniels edited and annotated. Babler joined the US Marine Corps during the years of the Great Depression in the US, and was sent to China to join the 4th Marine Regiment. The 4th Marine Regiment was evacuated from Shanghai to the Philippines just before the outbreak of the war, and saw action in defense of Corregidor. The bulk of Daniels' memoir deals with his life as a prisoner of war under the Japanese - 1220 days of hell, from the surrender of Corregidor to liberation in southern Japan. Frank talks about the tortures he received, but also about how he survived. He details his travails in Palawan, Nichols, Nielson, Zablan and other airfields in the Philippines; hell ship voyage to Japan and forced labor in coal mines. The editor, Daniels, was inspired to publish Babler's memoirs after he heard him speak of his war experiences. The book was published some ten years after Babler died. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
