Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Personal account of a young American ROTC officer, fresh from college, who is called to active duty and sent to the Philippines in 1941. Sent to Clark field as an engineering officer, he was there when it was bombed by the Japanese on December 8, 1941. He was then assigned to an engineering unit in Bataan, to work on roads and trails. The remaining half of the book describes Boyt's experiences as a prisoner of war: the death march, life in prison camp, to Japan via Hell Ship Nagata Maru (misspelled as Muru), and prison camp and forced labor in Japan. This book grew out of lectures Boyt was invited to give to the class of co-author Burch, where Burch decided Boyt's experiences deserved a whole book. Unfortunately, Boyt passed away a year before the book was published. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
