| Summary, Etc. |
- Summary, etc. - This book is a collection of verse (poems and songs) written by American prisoners of war captured in the Philippines. Most are anonymous, but a few authors are named.
The poems and songs reflect the experiences, hopes, and sentiments of these POWs, regarding the Battle of Bataan, the Death March, life in prison camp, rumors and reactions to the Japanese. A smaller section provides a number of pre-war American soldier verse in the Philippines.
All poems were collected by McKendree while he was a prisoner of war; they were written on various types of paper and were dangerous to keep since the Japanese forbade such writing and periodically checked the POWs belongings.
Part three of the book is a short autobiography of the compiler which focuses on his war experiences on Corregidor at the start of the war, and as a prisoner of war in various camps. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
