| Summary, Etc. |
- Summary, etc. - Researched account of the tragic battle to liberate Manila from the Japanese in February 1945.
The three British authors are military historians who try to give a more objective view of the battle and its atrocities, and try to look at the battle from all sides. They conclude that had MacArthur not encircled the city, the Japanese defenders led by Adm. Sanji Iwabuchi would have pulled out as ordered. (Other evidence indicates Iwabuchi would have stayed anyway).
The one-month battle cost the Americans 6,500 casualties, the Japanese 20,000 (most killed) and over 200,000 civilians (of which half were killed; the others would be scarred for life).
This is one of the few serious studies on the battle and has been reprinted in various editions. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
