| Summary, Etc. |
- Summary, etc. - Mapes was a ground crewmember of the 14th Bombardment Squadron who enlisted to see the world, be patriotic and to get away from his father. He was at Clark Field when the war began, and saw the Japanese attack. Most of his squadron's planes have been destroyed, Mapes was sent to Manila briefly and then to Bataan, all in December 1941; he was then ordered to Mindanao on the steamer Mayon; there he was in Malabang, Camp Keithley and other bases until Corregidor surrendered. He tried to escape prison camp, but eventually was incarcerated. He participated in the Mindanao Death March (of which little is written about), and was a prisoner of war in Malaybalay and Davao Penal Colony. He escaped from a prison ship (the Shinyo Maru) after it was torpedoed off Zamboanga by a US submarine, rescued by guerrillas and eventually evacuated to Australia on board the submarine USS Narwhal. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
