Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Personal account by an enlisted fighter pilot of the 34th Pursuit Squadron, who arrived in the Philippines on November 22, 1941. The squadron was assigned to Del Carmen field in Pampanga, and was equipped with old P-35 fighters. All the fighters were damaged or destroyed in a matter of days after the war started by Japanese aircraft. By December 26, the squadron was in Bataan. Oatman describes his experiences as an infantryman in Bataan, the surrender, Death March, and his escape. He was able to evade the Japanese and stayed at Fassoth's Camp in the Zambales mountains, before being forced to surrender. He narrates his life as prisoner of war, criticizing officers who made the best out of rank. He was transported to Japan on a prison ship, and survived forced labor in Japan. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
