- Summary, etc. - Personal account of a young American who enlisted to get out of the Great Depression. He volunteered for the Signal Corps and after training was sent to the Philippines where he was assigned to the signal unit. He narrates his life in the army, life in Manila before the war (including a radio intercept station and tunnels in Fort McKinley), and, the main part of his book, his experiences during the war: installing a submarine cable between Bataan and Corregidor; experiences in Corregidor and Bataan; the surrender (he tries to escape but fails; is sentenced to death by firing squad but is spared) and Death March; imprisonment by the Japanese (Camp O'Donnell; Cabanatuan); liberation by the Rangers in January 1945.
