Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Vol. 1: A.V.H. Hartendorp was an influential American intellectual, editor and writer before the war, having been editor of the prestigious Philippine Magazine. When the war broke out and President Manuel L. Quezon evacuated to Corregidor, Quezon asked Hartendorp to keep a record of events in the anticipated Japanese occupation. Hartendorp kept a detailed record of events as he saw them, both in Manila before the Japanese arrived, and inside Santo Tomas Internment Camp, where he and other American and allied nationals were interned. Hartendorp became the chronicler of Santo Tomas activities, keeping records and a diary. Hartendorp also talked to internees entering the camp from other parts of the Philippines, thus recording narratives of events in Baguio, the Visayas, Mindanao and elsewhere. He also copied articles from the daily Manila Tribune. The result was a voluminous record, which was written in secret and hidden from the Japanese. The chronicle is here published in two volumes. Volume I covers the start of the war, conditions in wartime Manila, and the entry of the Japanese. In alternating sections, he writes about Santo Tomas Internment Camp, and developments in the Philippines, covering the period January 1942 to October 1943 (when the Japanese sponsored Philippine Republic was inaugurated). - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
  • Summary, etc. - Vol. 2: The second of the two massive volumes of Hartendorp's chronicle of the Japanese occupation, covers the period from October 1943 until the end of the war. As in the first volume, the sections alternate between developments in the internment camp and in the Philippines, covering the opening of Los BaƱos internment camp, arrival of internees from other places in the Philippines, the first American air raids on the Philippines and Manila, and finally, the return of American troops and liberation from the Japanese. He details the Battle of Manila and the death and destruction it wrought. These two volumes are valuable in that they present a record written at the time the events were happening, and stories written down were fresh. The two tomes can be challenging to use because of all the information packed in them, but four indices (subjects, persons, places and firms) make a good research guide. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
