| Summary, Etc. |
- Summary, etc. - A novel based partly on real events and characters, depicting the life of American prisoners of war in Camp O'Donnell and Cabanatuan. A parallel theme follows unsurrendered Americans with the guerrillas just outside the camp, including their relations with the Huks. The author, a retired US Navy officer who was based in Japan and the Philippines, provides local color and conversations in Nippongo and Filipino, although these could have benefitted from some editing as there are several misspellings. The novel attempts to bring out the inhumanity of the Japanese captors, while showing the degradation of Americans to the extent that some became less than human. Despite the horrors of imprisonment, faith and the will to survive triumph. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
