Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Personal account of a young American who was drafted in 1941. He was shipped to the Philippines with other draftees, assigned to the 60th Coast Artillery Regiment on Corregidor, and manned his gun until the surrender in May 1942. He narrates his life as a prisoner of war: 92nd Garage area in Corregidor, the gloat march in Manila, Bilibid prison, Cabanatuan, prison ship to Japan, and 2 ½ years in Japan, including much brutality and slave labor. Baker’s daughter in law wrote down his memories in book form. Baker’s officers and the Japanese guards are given fake names to conceal their identities and allow Baker to talk frankly about their weaknesses and inhumanity. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
