General Note
  • General note - Picturing life in pre-World War II Philippines, wrenched from her tranquil home when Japanese soldiers invaded her hometown 4 days after Pearl Harbor, the author, her brother and sister are sent to join other mission families hiding in the hill country. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Personal account of an American girl who lived with her missionary parents in Albay before the war. She describes life before the war, and then spends more than half of the book on the war years in the Bicol region and internment. While the author's parents stayed on in the mission hospital, the author and her siblings, as well as a few other Americans, sought to escape the Japanese and lived in the hills for a few months, but in July 1942 they were captured and imprisoned at Legazpi's Regan Barracks. Two weeks later, they were brought to Manila and were interned at Santo Tomas Internment Camp. Because of the crowding at Santo Tomas, the group was allowed to go on house arrest in Ellinwood Church; in 1944, then they were moved to Los BaƱos where she stayed until liberated in February 1945. The author also narrates in parallel the experiences of her parents, who were separated from the children. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
