Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Personal account by an American veteran of Bataan and the Death March. Ingle volunteered for army duty rather than be drafted, and was sent to join the 31st Infantry Regiment (the only all-American infantry unit in the Philippines) in Manila in April 1941, a few months before the war broke out. A radio operator, Ingle narrates his experiences in pre-war Manila (where he falls in love with a Filipina), the shock of war and the abrupt move to Bataan. Ingle continues through the siege of Bataan, the surrender and the Death March. Almost half of the book is on his experiences as a prisoner of war of the Japanese in various camps in the Philippines and Japan. He went to Japan on one of the hell ships and was forced to work in a Japanese mine. After the war, Ingle testified on the Bataan Death March at the Tokyo War Crimes trial. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
