Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Lee was a 1st Lieutenant in the Headquarters and Military Police Company of the Philippine Division, U.S. Army and fought in Bataan. He was among those who had to surrender, go through the death march and suffer over three years of imprisonment. To while the time away in prison camp, he wrote poems to document what he saw in Bataan, the Death March and prison camp; many speak more eloquently than prose accounts. Lee was a gifted poet, and his poems were published in several venues; they are published here in tribute of Lt. Lee and his fellow prisoners of war. Lee was on board the infamous Oryoku Maru when it was bombed by US Navy planes in Subic Bay; he survived, only to die in another prison ship, in Taiwan. His notebook, containing the poems, was unearthed in the Cabanatuan prison camp after its liberation, and was returned to Lee's father. The book adds excerpts from some of Lee's letters home, as well as excerpts from his unit's history. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
