Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Biography of Paul Pickerrell, who was born to a very destitute family that they could only find shelter in a cave in New Mexico. When his mother died during childbirth, the children were sent to a Masonic orphanage. During the Great Depression, Pickerrell joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, and then the US Navy, where he was assigned to a submarine and sent to the Philippines. He became a crewmember of the submarine tender Holland, which left him and some shipmates in a boat in Cavite to fend for themselves. They were in Corregidor during the siege, and when the fortress surrendered, Pickerrell and his shipmates became prisoners of war. Author Anderson (who is Pickerrell's wife) continues Pickerrell's story through prison camp, hell ship and liberation after three and a half years. She concludes by narrating his life in the navy after the war. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
