| Summary, Etc. |
- Summary, etc. - Personal account by an American officer (West Point 1941 graduate) with the 14th Engineer Regiment (Philippine Scouts) in Bataan.
As an engineer officer, Kramer was tasked with preparing defensive positions, building roads and bridges; he comments on the confusion and contradictory orders he received. His unit was cut off during the final Japanese offensive, and he was permitted to try to escape from Luzon to the southern islands.
With ten other men, he began his journey out of Bataan by engineer assault boat; made it to Cavite, went overland to Tagaytay and Lemery, Batangas; he proceeded to Mindoro, and then to Panay. He spent much time evading the Japanese, but was aided by loyal Filipinos. In Panay, he was protected by the guerrillas until he was evacuated to Australia by submarine. Of the eleven who started their escape, Kramer was the only one to survive. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
