Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Diary of a young professional and educated US Army officer while he was a prisoner of the Japanese in the Philippines. Barker was with the 31st Infantry, U.S. Army and fought in Bataan, where he was recommended for a Silver Star; he was never awarded the medal as no one survived the war to recommend him for it. Barker himself did not live to see the end of the war: he was shipped out on one of the last hell ships to leave the Philippines (the Oryoku Maru, although it is not named in the book). He was reported as having died in January 1945, although nothing concrete is known. His diary, kept on a small British calendar he found, supplemented by whatever scraps of paper he could find, begins on May 24, 1942; the last entry is June 5, 1944. He documents the ordeal he and his fellow prisoners faced, as unclear his expressions of love for his wife and daughter whom he would never meet. This book, limited to 300 copies, was a labor of love by his brother, Paul, as a way of keeping alive Capt. Barker's legacy. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
