| Summary, Etc. |
- Summary, etc. - Vivid personal account of the suffering and horror of a survivor of the Bataan Death March and three years as a prisoner of war under the Japanese. Lawton was a college graduate who joined the US Army in 1940. He was shipped to the Philippines, where he was assigned to the 31st Infantry Regiment, 31st Division, Philippine Army. He describes the fighting on Bataan briefly, and focuses on the Death March and prison camp life (he was in Camp O'Donnell, Cabanatuan, Davao Penal Colony), hell ship voyage to Japan (on the notorious Oryoku Maru, Enoura Maru and Brazil Maru after they were sunk one after another), and forced labor camp in Japan. He points out the best and the worst of men that he saw, and shows how he and his friends were able to survive it all. Appendices include MacArthur's statement on the trial of the Japanese in charge of the Oryoku Maru, and a list of prisoners of war who were on board the three hell ships he was on. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
