Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - A personal memoir by a law student and ROTC cadet who was called to active service just prior to the war. From Manila he was ordered to be an officer of the 72nd Infantry Regiment, 71st Division, in Negros, and was in the process of moving by ship to Manila when the war began. Jalandoni recounts in detail his experiences in training his company (I Company); its being moved to Luzon (the unit was in Cebu when the war started), and the battles it fought in the defense campaign in Luzon and Bataan. He also narrates what happened after the surrender: the death march (narrowly missing being killed in the Pantingan River Massacre), prison camp, release and his experiences during the rest of the war. An appendix lists officers of his regiment who died during the battle of Bataan or in the subsequent prisoner of war ordeal; another lists the officers and men of Jalandoni's own company. This is one of the few memoirs on the Bataan campaign by a Filipino. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
