Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - This book is the personal account of an American missionary who, with his wife, was teaching in Silliman University in Dumaguete when the war broke out. The entire family had been assigned to Shanghai when the Japanese took over; they were then assigned to Silliman. The Lindholms tried to keep morale up but when the Japanese landed in Dumaguete, the whole family evacuated to the mountains. There they tried to keep the faith alive among Filipinos and other evacuees, and assisted the guerrilla forces. Aided by Filipinos - co-faculty, former students among others - the Lindholms remained out of Japanese hands, despite Japanese raids hunting for them. Mrs. Lindholm and the children were eventually evacuated by submarine to Australia, while the author remained behind to assist the resistance movement. (A new edition was issued in 2009). - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
