| Summary, Etc. |
- Summary, etc. - First book on the daring escape of American prisoners of war from Davao Penal Colony in 1943. McCoy narrates his experiences during the Bataan campaign as a naval officer, while Mellnik does the same from the perspective of a Corregidor staff officer. McCoy talks about what he saw in the death march; both tell about the ordeals of prisoners of war in Camp O'Donnell, Cabanatuan, Bilibid and Davao Penal Colony. Both (the book has each one speaking separately) detail their escape, being helped by the guerrillas, and evacuation to Australia. This, together with Ed Dyess' book (The Dyess Story) were the first books to expose Japanese brutality to American prisoners of war. Due to military security and the possible impact of the disclosure of their escape on the prisoners of war left behind, many details were omitted; the fact that they were taken out of Mindanao is not mentioned at all. For a more in depth study of this escape - and the details omitted in this book - see John D. Lukacs' "Escape from Davao." - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
