Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Angus Lorenzen grew up in Northern China in the 1930s, his father being manager of a large insurance firm. When the Sino-Japanese War broke out, Angus, his mother and sister were sent to Manila a few days before war reached the Philippines. He writes of his experiences as a seven-year old who had lived a pampered life in China to the Spartan life in Santo Tomas Internment Camp. The new experiences - novel and exciting at first - turned grim when the Japanese executed some internees; fear and apprehension took over, while maintaining a childhood curiosity. Ten years old when the Americans liberated the camp, he and his fellow internees found themselves in a devastated city. In three years, Angus' childhood was lost as the reality of life and war matured him. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
