Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - The author, a veteran of the Philippine defense campaign and over three years of imprisonment under the Japanese, wrote an earlier book about his own wartime experiences ("I'm One of the Lucky Ones"). In this book, Heimbuch details his family background (his forebears were of German ancestry who spent some time in Russia) and focuses on their contribution to the US war effort. Of seven brothers, one was unable to fight due to health reasons; another worked in one of the factories involved in strategic war industries. The other five joined the US armed forces and fought in various battlefields: he and another brother were in the 5th Air Base Group in Mindanao and were captured by the Japanese in 1942; one served with the US Marines and fought in Iwo Jima, one was in the US Navy and the other joined the Army Air Force. This book tells the multi-faceted experiences of these five brothers in arms. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
