- Summary, etc. - A personal account of the defense of the Philippines and ensuing prisoner of war ordeal.
Kathman was drafted into the 200th Coast Artillery Regiment in 1941 and sent to the Philippines. Shortly after he arrived, war broke out and Clark Field, where he was stationed, was bombed.
He narrates his experiences starting from his joining the army, arrival in the Philippines, the attack on Clark, action in Bataan, the surrender, the Death March and prison camp life. Written when Kathman was in his late 80s, his memory was aided by a diary and notes he kept while a prisoner of war; the resulting narrative is vivid and graphic as only an eyewitness can tell it. - Prof. Ricardo T.
