Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Personal account by a US Marine who joined the corps in 1939. Assigned to the 4th Marine Regiment in China, he writes about his assignment to China, the movement of the 4th Marines to Olongapo just prior to the outbreak of war, and duty on Corregidor for most of the siege. The bulk of the book is on his experiences as a prisoner of war, first in Camp O'Donnell, then in Cabanatuan and by hell ship (the Nissyo Maru) to Japan. He writes about his and his fellow prisoners' dreams for food; their hardships in forced labor; medical problems. In one chapter, he quotes excerpts from his diary. Another chapter justifies the use of the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
