Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Saga of Frank O. Promnitz, a US Marine who fought in Bataan and Corregidor, was captured by the Japanese and suffered for three and a half years in various Japanese POW camps. Before the war, he was stationed at Cavite Navy Yard; he describes life as a sailor before the war. Brought to Japan aboard a hell ship, he was liberated in Hitachi, Japan. Bergee (himself a US Marine who served in the Philippines and Korea) tells Promnitz' story in the first person, and adds background information derived from secondary works. Promnitz was awarded the Silver Star for courage; he died two years after the book was published. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
