| Summary, Etc. |
- Summary, etc. - Amea Willoughby was the wife of Woodbury Willoughby, Executive Assistant to Francis B. Sayre, newly appointed American High Commissioner to the Commonwealth of the Philippines. Arriving in November 1939, she lived an idyllic life until World War II intervened, and she, her husband and Sayre were evacuated to Corregidor. In February 1942, Sayre and the Willoughbys were evacuated to Australia by submarine. She describes pre-war Manila, the Filipinos she got to know, the difficulties of life in Corregidor, and the perils of the submarine voyage to safety. This was one of the earliest books on the Philippines during the first months of the war. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
