Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - English translation of what is probably the first book on the Battle of Manila and its atrocities, seen primarily from the experiences of the Spanish community. Although published in 1947, it received little attention in the Philippines, as it was a rare book and written in Spanish; this English translation brings the book to a wider audience. Perez de Olaguer was a Spanish writer and journalist who came to the Philippines in 1946 to interview survivors of the battle. He had his own connections with Manila: his father and brother had lived there – his brother was one of the many civilians killed in the battle. Perez de Olaguer presents the story in the words of the survivors he met; he also appends a list of Spaniards killed and several testimonies of survivors. The English edition has annotations (mainly by Edgar J. Krohn, Jr., himself a survivor) and maps of Manila which the original Spanish edition did not have. The organization which funded the translation and publication of this book, Memorare Manila 1945, is composed mainly of survivors of the battle hoping to keep alive the memory of the tragic battle and its victims. (This book was later reprinted by the National Commission on Culture and the Arts of the Philippine government) - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
