Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - The purported story of Jean-Marie Faggiano Heskett, the author's mother, as an internee in Santo Tomas Internment Camp. She was barely 6 years old when the Japanese entered Manila and interned her and her family. The story begins with her son discovering an old doll and asks his mother about it: Jean-Marie tells him it was given to her by an American GI in 1945. Ironically the doll was Japanese, and the story unraveled from there. Told in his mother's words, coming out of an extended interview, portions of the book are improbable and others simply not true. Jean-Marie claims to have learned enough Japanese during the war to be able to interpret for Gen. Chase (commander of the 1st Cavalry forces which liberated UST in 1945) and get Japanese to surrender; she also claims to have helped direct American artillery fire. Veterans and former Santo Tomas internees have severely criticized this book as being inaccurate and unfair to those who were there. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
