Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Scholarly overview and insightful interpretation of political developments in the Philippines during the last years of the American colonial regime, the Philippine Commonwealth, the Japanese occupation and the chaos of liberation. The original from which this book was based was the author's doctoral dissertation, which was based on extensive archival research and interviews with key surviving officials in the US, the Philippines and Japan. Although treatment of the Japanese occupation is relatively short, it is revealing and meaty, utilizing Japanese-language and English materials. Dr. Friend focuses on the political relations of the Filipino leaders - Quezon, OsmeƱa, Roxas - their American counterparts and also some Japanese officials. This book set a standard which has not been surpassed and remains a key work on the period. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
