Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - An important and pioneering compilation of articles on the life of prisoners of war after their release. Kelnhofer was captured on Wake Island in December 1941 and endured all the horrors suffered by POWs of Japan. His post-war life was a story of courage in trying to come to terms with the trauma of his experience. Aware that many POWs wrote about their experiences during the war, he noted that no one had written about life after imprisonment. He decided to write articles on this subject in order to help other former POWs cope better. The articles deal with prisoners of war from all wars, with lessons and experiences applying to all. There are suggestions for ex-POWs wives, and tips on how to avail of veterans' benefits. There is much mention of the Philippines in the text, and Appendix 1, where he cites specific veterans' experiences, there is a detailed description of the Oryoku Maru incident, as well as American POWs who were captured in the Philippines. The editor, Amy Lindgren, is a professional writer and counselor. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
