| Summary, Etc. |
- Summary, etc. - Prof. Meyer was born in Capiz; his parents were missionary doctors. Meyer left the Philippines just before the war, and his parents were executed by the Japanese in what the American missionary evacuees called Camp Hopevale. Prof. Meyer has had a soft spot for the Philippines, and he has published several vignettes that document various aspects of Philippine history as well as the author's own experiences in his many visits after the war. This particular volume contains two vignettes, the first being the testimony of Wanda Werff (single at the time), Prof. Meyer's pre-war classmate in Manila. Meyer gives a brief background on her, and prints her testimony in full regarding conditions in the Los BaƱos Internment Camp at the Tokyo War Crimes trial. He also gives a brief account of the liberation of the camp, accompanied by photographs. The second vignette is a brief history of the Bataan defense campaign, and a chronicle of Meyer's 2004 trip to revisit the battle sites and retrace the Death March. He includes photos taken in 1942 and during his trip. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
