Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc - Part of the series of pamphlets published by the US Army Center of Military History in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of WWII. This pamphlet deals with the US Army’s defense of and defeat in the Philippines 1941-1942. Bailey summarizes the campaign, acknowledging mistakes in command, and also courage in the field but in broad strokes (except for mention of 2 Lt. Alexander Nininger, Sgt Jose Calugas and 1Lt Willibald C. Bianchi as Medal of Honor heroes). Covers the defense of Luzon, specifically Bataan and Corregidor; there is no discussion of the Visayas-Mindanao campaigns. Since the focus is the US Army, the role played by the US Army Air Force, the US Navy and the Philippine Army are not given much attention. A Japanese wartime painting showing start of Death March is incorrectly captioned “The general attack on the Bataan Peninsula.” The back cover contains relevant titles for further reading. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
