Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - The authors, an American missionary medical doctor and nurse, respectively, were on their way to India when the war started. The ship they were on disembarked them in Manila, and sailed on, only to be sunk by the Japanese. Dr. Witthoff and nurse Chappell, writing in alternate chapters, detail their being stranded in Manila, keeping busy with the Civilian Emergency Administration, and their internment in Santo Tomas. They describe their life in Santo Tomas, and liberation in 1945. They went back to the US afterwards. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
