Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - During the early months of the Japanese administration of Santo Tomas Internment Camp, two news sheets were mimeographed for the information of the internees. Edited by Russell Brines of the Associated Press, these gave news on the camp, entertainment, administration and details of daily life and events which made it more bearable. These were contained in "Internews." "Campus Health" featured articles on sanitation and health in order to prevent the spread of disease. While the tone of both was humorous and optimistic, life was not as rosy. Copies of both were taken out via Jennifer White, an internee repatriated in late 1942. She had them reproduced and distributed to relatives and friends of internees she knew, through the organization Relief for Americans in the Philippines. The US reprint (November 1942) contains a map of the camp, an introduction by Jennifer White, a history of Santo Tomas University by Frederic S. Marquardt, a chart of the administrative organization of the camp. In this compilation, Copies of "Internews" run from January 24, through June 14, 1942; "Campus Health" issues are from March 6 through May 30, 1942. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
