- Summary, etc. - Personal account of an American soldier who was captured on Corregidor. A medic, Brown recounts his experiences at the start of the war on the island fortress, his transfer to the Fort Frank (Carabao Island) hospital, and return to Corregidor.
As a prisoner of war, he was forced to associate with David Provoo, an American soldier who sided with the Japanese and tormented the American prisoners of war, to the extent of killing one officer. Provoo was hated by the other prisoners of war, and Brown’s seeming closeness to the traitor led to his being suspected by the other Americans. To regain their trust, he claimed that he had Vanderbilt blood – a prominent elite American family – and was loyal to the American cause. He describes POW conditions in Bilibid, Davao, Cabanatuan, the hell ship Oryoku Maru, and liberation in Korea.
Brown’s book was first published in 1957 by Vantage Press; the copy in the Hall collection is the 2002 reprint, with offensive language removed and photographs added. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
