Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Military monograph dealing with the Battle of Bataan, from the perspective of a service company commander. A service company at that time dealt with logistics – food, fuel, transportation – for a larger unit, in this case the 31st Infantry Regiment, US Army. The 31st Infantry was the only all-American infantry regiment in the Philippines during the defense of the Philippines in 1941 to 1942, and as such was supposed to be more professional than the reserve units of the Philippine Army. However, many of its officers and men were detailed to the Philippine Army as advisers and instructors, resulting in a weakening of the unit. The author was the service company commander, and presents only those actions and experiences which he felt provided lessons for future operations, in particular the lack of peacetime training and preparation. Praises Filipino employees in his unit, and details shortages in transportation and supply. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
