- Summary, etc. - This monograph was written around 2001 when the US Army exhibited a renewed interest in urban warfare, considering terror threats at that time and beyond. The US Army’s Combat Studies Institute was directed to prepare in-depth case studies to give historical perspective and lessons in developing urban operations doctrines, and the Battle of Manila in 1945 was a classic topic to study.
Dr. Huber was a staff member of Command and General Staff College, Combat Studies Institute, at Ft Leavenworth, Kansas, and utilized various primary and secondary materials in preparing this well distilled, dispassionate military analysis of the battle: from Japanese defenses, US military operations and concerns (not all of which were obvious to the civilian population) and lessons learned.
The main focus is on the defensive strategy and tactics of the Japanese and the American methods to defeat the Japanese in their fortified position. A careful, detailed study which examines the major factors which resulted in the way the battle was fought, this monograph is free of the usual typographical errors found in many other works.
Issues on how to deal with civilians in the battlefield, evaluating the use of artillery, and providing basic utilities for the city – medicine, water, electric power – are also discussed. Huber notes: “The lesson here for operators in an urban warfare environment is that they must be prepared to exercise patience in their operations [since] there are likely to be numerous nonbelligerents present.”
