- Summary, etc. - Unpublished account of a young Japanese officer (he was a Second Lieutenant) called as one of the reinforcements to subjugate Bataan in 1942.
Kumai was among the replacements sent from Japan to build up the strength of the 65th Brigade under Gen. Nara. In Bataan, he was in command of a machine gun platoon of the 142nd Infantry Regiment, 65th Brigade; he details his experiences and impressions on arriving in the Philippines, being briefed about the enemy (Americans and Filipinos) and then plunging into combat in the big Japanese offensive launched on April 3, 1942.
Kumai presents a different picture of how Filipino soldiers reacted to the surrender, and the beginning of the Death March. After two weeks, his unit was ordered to Northern Luzon for mopping up operations. This account was written in the form of an extended letter to Kumai’s father in 1968, twenty six years after thee events he describes. Interesting also for his comments on the Japanese Army and its lack of hygiene in camps.
Originally written in Japanese, it was translated into English by retired teacher Yuka Ibuki. This English account contains highlights of Kumai’s narrative, and skips some pages. The rest of Kumai’s experiences are covered in his book, The Blood and Mud in the Philippines. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
