Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Personal account of an American employee of the Philippine Refining Company, who returned to Manila from home vacation and was caught in the war. He volunteered for military service, and because of his engineering and other skills, was assigned to the piers in Manila, and then to Corregidor. He claims to have been sent back to Manila to conduct demolition work and reportedly blew up Las Pinas bridge, after which he casually returned home. He was arrested by the Japanese and was interned in Santo Tomas. Later moved to Los Baños, he established contact with the guerrillas, and describes how the camp was liberated in 1945. An addendum provides additional information, such as the fact that guerrilla leader Walter Cushing was his high school classmate, details of internment camp life and others. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
