General Note
  • General note - Summary: This film describes conditions at the Santo Tomas concentration camp operated by the Japanese to house American and British troops during World War II. The camp was located on the grounds of a university in Manila and was liberated in 1945...
Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc - Commercial edition of actual US Signal Corps footage of Santo Tomas Internment Camp and Manila during the liberation by American forces in February 1945. This is raw footage, very historic since it was shot as events were unfolding, but there is no narration or explanation. Events, persons and locations can be identified if the viewer is familiar with the Battle of Manila. Sequences are not arranged chronologically: images show Santo Tomas liberated; freed prisoners of war in Bilibid Prison; fires set by the Japanese in Manila to the south of UST; fires and damage caused by Japanese artillery on UST's buildings and houses across the street (including actual footage taken as Japanese shells were landing and internees and soldiers running for cover). There is footage of GIs in Central Luzon advancing towards Manila; MacArthur visiting Santo Tomas; refugees fleeing Manila; pontoon bridge building and vehicles crossing; fires in Manila and firemen trying to fight them; Balintawak Beer Brewery and other scenes. 28 minutes long, black and white, silent. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
