Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Estimate of the Japanese Strength in Luzon as of December 15, 1944, three weeks before MacArthur’s forces landed in Lingayen Gulf. Based largely on guerrilla intelligence reports, this study (Top Secret at that time) examines in close detail Japanese defenses in Luzon as a whole, and particularly on the prospective landing beaches: Lingayen Gulf, Manila Bay and Lamon Bay; Bataan and Subic; Balayan-Batangas; the Bicols and Dingalan Bay; Baler Bay and the North and Northwest coasts of Luzon. Japanese units and defensive fortifications are itemized in text and shown on maps. This report notes specific tunnels, beach defense positions and trenches, anti-aircraft guns and field guns, and the location of mobile units. (Despite this level of detail, MacArthur’s intelligence chief, Gen. Willoughby, under whom this study was compiled, underestimated the Japanese forces and strategy on Luzon). - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
