Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - World War II experiences of Kidder, a US Navy petty officer assigned to the submarine tender USS Canopus. The Canopus remained behind in Manila Bay and Bataan to service submarines which periodically stopped by for replenishment and also to provide a repair shop for the army. Its crewmembers - including Kidder - were pressed into service as infantrymen to beef up the Bataan garrison, and later Corregidor. Kidder was one of those who had to surrender, join the Death March and endure various POW camps. He was brought to Japan by POW hell ship and forced to work for the Japanese as a slave laborer at the docks. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
