Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Brougher was a US Army Brigadier General who commanded the Philippine Army's 11th Division in the defense of Luzon and Bataan in 1941-1942. He was also an able writer. This book assembles some of his anecdotes and short stories regarding his military career and other experiences. The title story is about a Japanese prison camp guard nicknamed "Baggy Pants," who asked Brougher to write him a poem. Brougher obliged, careful not to step on sensitive toes. Although "Baggy Pants" could not fully understand English, he was happy. The story won a Reader's Digest contest for best True Personal Experience Story, and was published in January 1956. Two other stories "The Rooster's Nest - 9 April 1942" and "I was Liberated by the Russians" also deal with Brougher's prisoner of war experiences (both are also included in Brougher's other compilation, "The Long Dark Road"). (The other stories do not deal with the war or the Philippines). - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
