Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - This book is an expansion of his earlier "USAFFE," which is essentially incorporated in this volume, with additional information and focus on the 192nd Tank Battalion, of which Poweleit was battalion surgeon. Poweleit presents a history of the battalion, the roster of its officers and men prior to shipping out to the Philippines. The bulk of the book is from Poweleit's own diary during the Bataan campaign and as a prisoner of war, as published in "USAFFE" (also included are the chapters on the Hell Ships, the Palawan massacre, the post-war trials against Gen. Homma). As in his earlier book, his accounts are quite accurate as to the events he witnessed, but has several errors on events he only heard about. The 192nd Tank Battalion did not wholly come from the state of Kentucky, although the unit was based there before deploying to the Philippines. (One company was from Janesville, Wisconsin; another was from Maywood, Illinois, and a third was from Port Clinton, Ohio. Only one company came from Kentucky, and this was transferred to the 194th Tank Battalion before the war). - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
