Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Raymond was a sergeant with the 48th Materiel Squadron, a US Army Air Corps unit which arrived in the Philippines in November 1941. Without planes to support, he became an infantry sergeant and saw action in Bataan. This book is his memoir, partly based on a diary he kept, and partly written with his co-author. He details especially the horrors of the death march and prison camp life, beginning with Camp O'Donnell. He was assigned to a work detail in Bataan, and then was incarcerated in Cabanatuan. Sent to Japan on a prison ship, he spent over one and a half years working in Japanese mines and other war industries. Raymond kept a diary while in captivity, and tried to write his memoirs based on it several times (he was a newspaper editor after the war), but was unable to finish it until he met Mike Pride, a professional journalist, who helped him see this book through. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
