| Summary, Etc. |
- Summary, etc. - Subtitle on the cover: From the terror of war to triumph in the service. The author and her husband were American Baptist missionaries who arrived in the Philippines in 1935. With the advent of war, she and other members of her church evacuated to Baras, Rizal; with the approach of the Japanese, however, they returned to Manila. She and her husband were in the city when the Japanese took over, and were initially interned. Through the Japanese Religious Section, they were released and allowed to reopen their churches, provided they pledged to cooperate with the Japanese. Marian's husband, head of the First Baptist Church, refused to sign the pledge and as a result was interned in Santo Tomas. Marian remained outside the camp, aided by Filipino friends. When the Japanese arrested American religious leaders still outside Santo Tomas in mid 1944, Marian was one of those brought to Fort Santiago and interrogated for seventy two days. She was then brought to Santo Tomas where she stayed with her husband until the end of the war. The manuscript of this book was originally written in secret in Santo Tomas, revised and with additions in 1948. The author also includes stories of other Baptist friends, one of whom was liberated in Los BaƱos. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
