| Summary, Etc. |
- Summary, etc. - De Asis had graduated from the University of Santo Tomas College of Law and was preparing for life as a professional lawyer when he was called to active duty in the USAFFE, as an officer of the 2nd Regular Division. He served in Bataan, became a prisoner of war but was forced to join the Japanese-sponsored Bureau of Constabulary (BC). He was selected as one of ten BC officers and seventeen other Filipinos who went to Japan as a ryugakusei, or foreign student, sponsored by the Japanese government. This program, aimed at replicating the American pensionado plan for Filipinos, aimed to reorient Filipinos away from the US and towards Japan. De Asis kept a detailed diary during his stay in Japan, covering the period June 27, 1943 through October 3, 1944, when he returned home. Through this diary, De Asis documents his experiences as a special foreign student in Japan, his reactions to Japanese culture and the Japanese people. Prof. Goodman provides a concise background to De Asis' life and the Japanese program. When American forces returned to the Philippines, De Asis provided them with a copy of his diary and an intelligence report on conditions in Japan. The intelligence report is added as an appendix. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
