Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Researched popular history of the 26th Cavalry Regiment (Philippine Scouts), the last horse cavalry regiment in the US Army. This regiment was one of the most professional military units in the Philippines in 1941, and fought bravely against tremendous odds (sometimes men on horseback vs. tanks) to try to stem the Japanese advance in northern Luzon. The regiment also provided much needed cover for forces withdrawing to Bataan. Accordingly, they suffered heavy casualties but fought the best of their ability until their horses were taken away in Bataan, to provide food for the starving garrison. The book focuses on the battles fought by the regiment from the start of the war until January 22, 1942, when the horses were taken away. The period covered saw much bravery, including the last horse charge by the US cavalry (mostly Filipino soldiers led by American officers) in Morong, Bataan. Contains a roster of the officers and men of the regiment. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
