Lovato was called to service with the 200th Coast Artillery Regiment from New Mexico, and arrived in the Philippines shortly before the outbreak of war. Lovato was stationed in Clark Field, as part of the anti-aircraft defenses, and went into action when the Japanese raided Clark on December 8, 1941. Lovato was moved to Bataan, where he and his unit continued , in vain, to try to shoot down Japanese planes. He was surrendered with the Bataan garrison, participated in the Death March and survived three and a half years as a prisoner of war in Camp O'Donnell, and Cabanatuan; brought out by hell ship, and finally liberated in Fukuoka in 1945. - Prof. Ricardo T.
