Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Exhaustively researched account of the 27th Bomb Group, one of several air units sent to the Philippines in a last ditch effort to build up the defenses. The 27th Bomb Group was the last to arrive in Manila before the war. While the men arrived safely, the planes, on separate ships, did not. The unexpected outbreak of the war saw the ships diverted to Australia. The 27th Bomb Group thus fought as infantry in Bataan, something they were not trained for. This account focuses on the unit’s arrival in the Philippines and its operations in the defense campaign; only a few pages are devoted to the fate of the men after the surrender. Very detailed on the various bomber squadrons of the units. Appendices include rosters, maps, a chronology, and other details. The author’s uncle, Staff Sgt. Emil Russ May was a member of this bomb group but died in Cabanatuan as a POW; this work is the result of the author’s efforts to find all she could about her deceased uncle and his unit. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
